Shoes4Souls primary purpose is to put either a new or used pair of shoes on the feet of those who don’t have any. People living on the streets without permanent residence are often those least likely to be able to afford shoes. In South Africa and throughout Africa many people live a subsistence based existence, by either making arts and crafts to sell on the side of the road, recycling waste, selling newspapers or collecting rubbish from cars for small donations. Parents experience difficulty affording school shoes due to their high cost and short duration of use as a result of growing feet. Shoes4Souls is about restoring dignity and meeting one of our most basic needs, a pair of shoes on our feet.

Shoes are most often the most expensive item of clothing we wear, yet they are also subject to the most wear and tear, especially if you only have one pair. For many people their only means of transport is their feet. Shoes are to them like car tyres. They experience high rates of wear and tear as they traverse and operate on hot roads and rough uneven terrain. They get subjected to wet conditions and cleaning and maintenance pose challenges when you cannot leave them somewhere to dry.
Due to their importance and relative high cost, shoes are in high demand and subject to theft. Homeless people often remove their shoes and tie them to their wrists at night, or use them as pillows to ensure they still have them in the morning. The nature of life on the streets and the lack of shoes or suitable foot covering often leads to cuts and abrasions which easily become infected. This makes walking all the more difficult and painful. Shoes are often sold as a last resort when hunger sets in and there is no other way to secure a meal.
A pair of shoes is a most basic need and one which we take for granted. At Shoes4Souls we believe that the meeting of this need is a simple way we can show God’s grace to His precious souls. As we are blessed, we in turn are able to bless others. It is our belief as we become a conduit for God’s love, He will receive glory and continue to pour out His blessing. We believe in the need to show love to people, and so we believe in “walking with our hearts”.

Shoes4Souls has designed and commissioned collection bin boxes. These boxes are placed at businesses, churches, schools and various clubs. Each box is championed by an individual in the applicable organisation who retains contact with Shoes4Souls.

Notifying them when shoes require collection, or they themselves collect and deliver to Shoes4Souls. The champions are those that have joined in seeing the need in society and decided to contribute to the solution.

We collect new, used and broken shoes of all shapes, sizes and types, children to adults, men’s and woman’s. We additionally collect school and sports shoes.

Broken shoes are repaired by a strategic partner. The long term plan is to develop and leverage this relationship to offer homeless individuals the opportunity to train as cobblers as part of a job creation and skills transfer programme. Shoes received are washed and cleaned and catalogued. One of our strategic partners is currently developing an application that will handle the logistics and warehousing function, which will allow us to give detailed reports to all donors and track each shoe from receipt to final distribution. This will be smartphone based, so expansion to multiple locations will be easily managed. Another strategic partner is assisting us by supplying Shoes4Souls with all our internal boxing storage and for distribution.

Future plans are to continue working with schools to get Matric learners to donate their shoes at the completion of their studies, and learners who have outgrown theirs in earlier grades to do the same. To encourage churches, schools and social clubs to host shoe collection drives, where members can contribute in large volumes.

Shoes are distributed to those in need, predominantly in the Pretoria CBD. As Shoes4Souls grows we plan to expand this distribution footprint and start supporting other organisations, schools as well as being able to respond to crisis situations where communities are ravaged by disaster.

Shoes4Souls is a registered NPO (232-857 NPO). The project was initiated through a crowd funding campaign to raise funds to place the order for the first 100 collection box bins. While only partially funded from the campaign, the boxes were ordered in faith. Currently

Shoes4Souls
ambassadors and champions are stepping up, placing collection box bins in their places of influence and spreading the vision. Many school children have started championing the cause within their schools.
Shoes4Souls is managed by an accountability group of individuals who have common passion and vision for the project. As the organisation grows and develops and direct financial contributions wish to be made, more permanent management structures will be put in place to suitably deal with and comply with legislation and to ensure sufficient transparency of donor’s funds. Currently costs for the project are met by direct contributions from the members of the accountability group.
Foundation300

A review of ancient history reveals that significant feats were achieved with just 300 warriors. Leonidas led 300 Spartan warriors, at the battle of Thermopylae where they resisted the entire Persian army led by King Xerxes. Gideon led the Israelites into battle against the Midianites with 300 soldiers armed with only rams’ horns and torches.

Shoes4Souls invites you to be one of the Foundation300 and in so doing enabling us to carry out our motto of, “Walking with our hearts”. We are looking for 300 people to join us in fighting poverty one step at a time, by committing to donate from a minimum of R100 per month for a year.

Currently distribution of shoes takes place in the Pretoria CBD. As our quantity of school shoes on hand increases, we will identify schools in need through our network. We currently operate from premises in Garsfontein, Pretoria East. The vision is to have Shoes4Souls hubs in Durban, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
